Kitchen Upkeep Tips For Working Moms

The number of women holding steady jobs while running a household is increasing. This trend is not showing any signs of slowing down as economic and social factors dictate that many women must juggle several responsibilities all at once. The home, one’s career, a husband, and children all compete for only 24 hours each day and a career woman must prioritize as well as maximize the hours that are available to her. This is a fairly new phenomenon as decades ago, women dedicated all their time in the house and around the kitchen.

The ability to earn a living means that your time for other activities is lessened. You have to spend a definite time every day at work and all the commuting takes away from what precious time you have left. Many chores can wait until the weekend but many more needs to be done on a daily basis unless you want to be swamped.

The kitchen is a place that demands constant attention. Neglecting cleaning schedules here will pose health hazards especially to small children. Hiring some help would be nice but is counterproductive as the money you earn by being away at work will just go to housekeeping expenses.

That is why you have to be a little wiser in going about your chores. The following tips might prove useful to you:

·        Make a list of five basic tasks that you need to do before going to bed. These need to be absolutely important and you cannot put these off for another day. On a typical day, you need to: wash the dishes, store leftovers and throw away food scraps, wipe down the countertops, sweep and mop the floor, and finally, take out the trash. By following this simple routine, you are assured of minimizing the hazards associated with leaving food out and letting waste and dirt accumulate.

·        Clean up as you go. Don’t put off tidying up for another day. Make a habit of putting things away after using them and cleaning up messes and spills immediately. Failing to do so will have clutter building up and making the job more difficult than necessary.

·        Keep an eye out for practical storage solutions. You have to allot a specific place for everything. This makes searching for something quick and simple. For small kitchens, adding shelves and hanging pot and pans is not only practical, it can be decorative as well.

·        It is best to keep things simple. You cannot be expected to prepare a five-course dinner after coming home from work. Have a handful of healthy, quick, and easy recipes on hand to use at a moment’s notice. Don’t fall for the fast food shortcut as eating that stuff every single day can be bad for you. Just go with dishes that offer an entire meal onto themselves like pasta, casseroles, and meat stews with a lot of vegetables and potatoes. Remember, you can always practice being a chef on the weekends when you are not so busy.
